Freedom by definition is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants. It can also be said that Freedom is the state if not being imprisoned or enslaved. On this day, 27th April in 1994, the first democratic election was held in South Africa. Today, South Africa celebrates Freedom Day to mark the liberation of our country and its people from the long struggle of oppression. Let us recognise those who dedicated their lives to realise the dream. Liberation and freedom have another side to the physical implications. It is the heart and mind that we should nourish and nurture to follow suit. Even once unbounded by the shackles, it is easy to keep the mind in captivity. In the words of the great poet Ms Maya Angelou: “I know why the caged bird sings.” It is the experience of confinement that has fine-tuned and presented an opportunity for the bird to sing.
